Laminate veneers are a type of dental veneer that is often used to improve the aesthetic outlook of your teeth.

What are dental veneers?

There are two main types materials used in dental veneers: composite (or "resin" in Korea) and porcelain. Similarly, there are also two types of application for dental veneers. Full-crown veneers are restorations that cover the entire coronal tooth surface, and are known as "all-ceramic" in Korea. On the other hand, laminate veneers are thin layers that cover only the surface of the tooth. Laminate veneers in Korea are more widely popular.

Composite vs porcelain veneers

Now that you've read about the different materials used in dental veneers, which one should you go for?

Generally, composite veneers are cheaper compared to porcelain ones. Composite veneers are directly sculpted on the teeth, while porcelain veneers need to be created in an offsite lab. While composite veneers can be reversed after the procedure, porcelain veneers involve reshaping of actual teeth. However, this also depends on the extent of damage on the tooth. In cases of severe damage, composite veneers cannot be utilized.

While porcelain veneers may be more expensive, they are also far more durable. In other countries, porcelain veneers have to be built in offsite labs, but dentists with CAD/CAM technologies can build the veneers onsite. Porcelain veneers in Korea are often built this way.

In terms of tooth surface removal, full-crown veneers require the most removal. This is followed by laminate veneers, and lastly composite veneers.

What happens when I get dental veneers?

Firstly, the dentist removes 0.5-0.7mm of surface from the teeth. Then, an impression is made with silicon to create a trial set of veneers. This impression is then sent to the lab, which makes a wax model. Upon completion of the model, the patient is able to confirm if the shape and length of the veneer is to satisfaction. A temporary material is placed over the existing teeth, and then developed in lab as actual veneers. The process is complete once veneers are attached to the actual teeth.
